A surgical procedure meant to counter ulcerative colitis, an immune disease affecting the colon, may trigger a second immune system attack, a new study shows.
The study results revolve around the immune system, the cells and proteins that destroy invading bacteria and viruses. Activating it brings about inflammation, responses like swelling and pain that result from cells homing in on the site of infection or injury. Autoimmune diseases like ulcerative colitis occur when this system mistakenly damages the body s own tissues.
Colon tissue damaged by the disease is routinely addressed with a J-pouch procedure wherein a pouch is surgically constructed from nearby, healthy small intestine tissue to replace the damaged section of the colon. The procedure is designed to restrain the inflammatory attack on the colon, but more than half of these patients, unfortunately, go on to develop inflammation in the J-pouch (pouchitis).
Road to Partition: how the border was drawn up
A very different border could have been chosen, but by the time the Better Government of Ireland act passed on 23 December 1920, the line between what would become Northern Ireland and the rest of the island had been drawn.

In early 1919 Lloyd George s coalition government was engaged in the realignment of European borders at the Paris Peace Conference but, by the Autumn of that year, attention was focused again on the Irish question.
Conscious that the outdated 1914 Home Rule Act was on the Statute Book and would operate automatically after the European treaties were finalised, the Prime Minister set up a special cabinet committee under the chairmanship of Unionist Walter Long to advise on new Home Rule legislation.
The Government of Ireland Act 1920 received the royal assent from King George V a century ago last month. This most consequential of acts resulted in the partition of Ireland. The genesis of the Government of Ireland Act 1920 came in 1919.
Home Rule had been on the statute book since 1914 and could no longer be postponed. It was scheduled to come into operation automatically when hostilities were formally concluded with the signature of the last of the peace treaties after the First World War.
To prevent this, the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, set up a committee, chaired by Cabinet member Walter Long, to draft the Government of Ireland Bill.

JANE RASCH
Jane Susanne Rasch went to be with our Lord December 27, joining her husband Kenneth Rasch to share their spirit and joy in heaven.
In her 95 years, Fort Dodge has enjoyed Jane’s everlasting positive attitude towards all life while sharing God’s blessings. Her outreach through Sacred Heart church brought much happiness to the community.
Growing up in the family of railroad engineer Joseph Devlin, she graduated from Sacred Heart high school. She was employed at Tobin Packing Company in Fort Dodge and later met Kenneth at a ballroom dancing school.
Sixty-nine years ago they began their marriage with a belief in a big family. “Cheaper by the dozen” they spoke of, but later said forget the cheaper part and focus on the rewards of a loving family. Many family travels in Henrietta (the family bus camper) were enjoyed including executive retreats for the Land Improvement Contractors of America.
