By way of a Memorandum dated December 18 and headed “Financial Constraints- Christmas 2020,” the Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight has informed public officers that the Government would not be funding any Christmas activities or gifts for staff. The Memo reads: “In view of the severe financial constraints facing the Government of Belize at this time… a decision has been taken not to promote or fund any Christmas activities or gifts for staff this year (including even small take-out Christmas lunches this year).” It is a strange memo and one that public officers are none too happy with. Some we have spoken to say that they understand that social gatherings are not accepted but they question how much money can really be saved by not providing them with a Christmas meal.
