Presented by Pre-K Our Way Good Thursday morning! So is this why Jack Ciattarelli went so hard at Hirsh Singh during Tuesday’s debate? A Democratic Governors Association poll shows Ciattarelli leading Singh in the primary by a too-close-for-comfort 29 percent to 23 percent. It also shows nearly three-quarters of Republicans adhering to the false beliefs that Donald Trump won the 2020 election, the Capitol riot was a left-wing “false flag” operation and Democrats exaggerated the pandemic to hurt Trump. NJ lawmakers delay vote on police chokeholds, activists seek ban

NJ lawmakers delay vote on police chokeholds, activists seek ban TRENTON – Legislation that seeks to limit the use of chokeholds by police stalled in the Statehouse in the leadup to Tuesday s anniversary of George Floyd’s murder – and police reform activists were thrilled. The bill, A4263/S2562, had already passed the Assembly nearly unanimously last June, 72-0 with six votes to abstain. It would clarify that a law enforcement officer who knowingly chokes another person engages in use of deadly force, which is only allowed in limited circumstances. Activists say chokeholds should be banned entirely, not allowed in circumstances that would justify it when needed to protect the officer or another person from death or serious bodily injury, to arrest or prevent the escape of a violent criminal or to prevent the commission of a violent crime.

NJ ICE contracts bill for immigrants moves forward in legislature

View Comments A state legislative panel advanced a bill Thursday to bar new contracts to house federal immigrant detainees in New Jersey, a step toward ending the practice that has sparked years of protests by immigration advocates.  The bill, sponsored by state Senators Loretta Weinberg of Teaneck and Nia H. Gill of Montclair, passed by a party-line vote, with four Democrats on the Law and Public Safety Committee supporting it and two Republicans opposed.  “The Garden State has long been a landing spot for new immigrants, and it is time we started living up to our values, Weinberg said in a statement. This bill, hopefully, will be part of a new foundation that will add a needed dose of humanity to our immigration policies.
