The Tri-County Symphonic Band, under the direction of Philip Sanborn, will present a program entitled “Soloists for Scholarships” on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 3:00 p.m. The concert will be a virtual live-stream, free of charge event and can be viewed on ORC-TV (Comcast: Channel 9 or Verizon: Channel 36). Soloists who have appeared with the band are highlighted in this concert. Among these amazing soloists is alto saxophonist Marcus Monteiro, according to a press release. Born and raised in Marion and educated in the Old Rochester Regional Schools prior to earning his bachelor of music degree from the University of Massachusetts, Monteiro has gone on to high musical achievements, the release notes. McLean County Public Defender Carla Barnes has been appointed as the first Black woman to serve as a circuit judge in Illinois’ 11th Judicial Circuit.
Barnes fills the vacancy created by Judge Scott Drazewski’s recent retirement. It’s her second attempt at being appointed to the bench in the circuit that covers McLean, Ford, Livingston, Logan, and Woodford counties.
“I started with the public defense s office 19 years ago. I have enjoyed serving our clients as I worked my way up from traffic court to major felonies. During my six years as chief public defender, I ve always said I have the best job in the county,” Barnes said.

The Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ’s Christmas with Kennerley Home for the Holidays concert can be viewed online at 7 p.m. every evening through Monday, Dec. 28.
Portland Municipal Organist James Kennerley welcomes Maine’s own husband and wife soloists, Jonathan Boyd (tenor) and Malinda Haslett (soprano), the Pine Tree Academy Bell Choir, dancers from the Maine State Ballet performing pieces from “The Nutcracker,” as well as brass accompaniment by trumpeter, Joseph Foley.
The concert will include familiar Christmas favorites, as well as new pieces to enjoy while spending holiday time in a new way.
