Panama City Beach volunteers see uptick in trash on beach

PANAMA CITY BEACH  Beach cleanup organizations have picked up hundreds of pounds of trash after Memorial Day weekend and the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam.  Trash on the sandy beaches has been a problem for years, but with an uptick in tourism this year, the problem has gotten worse, officials say. We had a big cleanup Saturday for World Ocean Day . and we picked 243 pounds of trash off of the beach, said JoAnn Weatherford, president of Keep PCB Beautiful. A part of the problem is those beach chairs that are left on the beach every night. When the vendors go home, people go out, sit in them and leave all of their trash.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Saturday, Keep PCB Beautiful invited boaters out to Captain Anderson’s Marina to “stash the trash.” The workshop taught folks how to turn a five-gallon bucket into a trash can for their boat. When it comes to waves, event organizers made sure attendees were given lids for their newly decorated trash cans. Funding for the project came from a Florida Department of Transportation grant, created to help prevent littering.
