New York, Apr 28 (EFE News).- Attacks on Asians since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic have spurred members of that community in New York City to flock to self-defense workshops where they learn how to protect themselves when faced with racist attacks, a phenomenon that is directed increasingly against the more marginalized and vulnerable groups in society.
“The Asian-American community’s being faulted for the spread of Covid … We’re scapegoated, and so all the physical attacks have been happening, and we’ve seen some really horrific videos,” the executive director of the Asian American Federation, Jo-Ann Yoo, told EFE in an interview.

A man accused of attacking an Asian man in New York City s Harlem neighborhood has been arrested, city police announced Tuesday. Jarrod Powell, 49, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with two counts of felony assault.
The 61-year-old victim, identified by family as Yao Pan Ma, was attacked on April 23, police said. The suspect approached him from behind, struck him in the back, causing him to fall, and then kicked in the head multiple times, police said.
Ma was hospitalized and remains in a coma, his wife, Baozhen Chen, told CBS New York. This should not happen to my husband or anyone else. This is America, she said. I m very scared right now. I m so worried that my husband might never come back.
