Human Rights Experts Raise Alarm for Rohingya After Myanmar Coup

In the wake of a February 1 military coup in Myanmar, experts are concerned the change in power will further endanger human rights protections, especially for Rohingya Muslims an ethnic minority that faced atrocities potentially amounting to genocide under the previous, and freely elected, administration. “The man who oversaw genocidal acts against the Rohingya, and war crimes and crimes against humanity against other ethnic minorities, is now the sole leader of the country: Min Aung Hlaing,” said Shayna Bauchner, a researcher in Human Rights Watch’s Asia division. Since gaining independence from the British colonial rule in 1948, Myanmar’s government has shifted back and forth between military and civilian control. As the spiraling cases of COVID-19 shut Cape nursing homes    including Liberty Commons to indoor visitors, fears of a return to the social isolation experienced during the spring pandemic peak loom in the minds of residents and their families. Social isolation can be a threat to physical and mental well-being, according to experts in elder health care.

Amnesty official alleges organisation s activities halted in India due to freezing of its accounts | India News

WASHINGTON: An Amnesty International official has alleged that the organisation was forced to lay off all staff and cease all human rights work after its bank accounts were frozen in India. Joanne Lin, national director for Advocacy and Government Affairs at Amnesty International USA, made the allegations during a Congressional hearing on international human rights. India s home ministry in October said the organisation s claims that it is being subjected to an incessant witch-hunt were unfortunate, exaggerated and far from the truth. The ministry said that Amnesty International had received permission under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) only once and that too 20 years ago (on December 19, 2000). Since then, it said, the organisation, despite its repeated applications, has been denied FCRA approval by successive governments since as per law it is not eligible for it.
