Campaign raising money for family of bicyclist killed in La Jolla crash
The postdoctoral office at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla has organized a GoFundMe campaign and memorial fund for the family of Swati Tyagi, a Salk researcher who died June 23 on North Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla in a crash while riding her bicycle.
More than $60,000 had been raised as of July 6.
Investigators said Tyagi, 34, was riding in the right lane when she merged into the left lane and was struck from behind by a car. She died at the scene.
The GoFundMe page was established by Tyagi’s colleagues to help provide emergency assistance to her husband, Ashim Rai, and 11-month-old son, Miransh.

Citing potential disturbance of sea lions at Point La Jolla and a failure of organizers to secure needed permits in time, the California Coastal Commission said June 30 that La Jolla’s planned Fourth of July fireworks display should be moved from La Jolla Cove. It remains to be seen whether the show will take place at another location four days from now.
Dave Rolland, senior advisor of communications for San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, confirmed to the
La Jolla Light that the show would not be permitted to go on as planned, with fireworks launched from near The Cove.
La Jolla High School students receive athletic awards
Recent La Jolla High School graduate Rhys Bugelli has won the Matthew Abrams Memorial Award, which comes with his name on an award plaque hung at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex and a $1,000 scholarship.
The award was begun in 2019 by La Jollans Dave and Joyce Abrams as a way to memorialize their son Matthew Abrams, a 1999 LJHS graduate and MVP of its water polo team that year who died of cancer in 2018.
Water polo was Matthew’s passion, Dave Abrams said. “We thought it’s fitting that we tie this memorial into that aspect of his life.”
