RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Eighteen Virginia State Police personnel have received American Red Cross National Lifesaving Awards for Professional Responders.
The awards, which is one of the organization’s highest awards, are given to first responders and healthcare workers who have saved or sustained a life as a direct result of Red Cross training.
“Each of these dedicated members of Virginia State Police have not only upheld their pledge ‘to aid those in danger or distress,’ but they have also exemplified what it means to be part of an organization dedicated to the preservation of life,” said Colonel Gary T. RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - As thousands remain without power in Central Virginia, the Red Cross has continued to respond to house fires and trees into homes, displacing people.
“What we are seeing is more people are using space heaters, they are leveraging generators and what we see in these events, people bring those into their homes and they may not have used them for an extended period of time,” said Jonathan McNamara with the Red Cross. “We’re also responding to a noticeable increase in fires across the area this weekend. On top of that, we have had trees going onto homes that Red Cross volunteers are responding to.”
Va. Emergency Official: Power could be out at least 24 to 48 hours
Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) officials have urged everyone to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages during and after Saturday forecasted ice storm. VDEM employees met with localities and the National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday to prepare for the icing event, according to Deputy Director of Communications Jason Elmore.
