This eulogy was delivered by
Eugene Ashton, chief executive of Jonathan Ball Publishers, in memory of Jonathan Ball, who died on 3 April 2021, at a remembrance service held at the Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church in Constantia, Cape Town.
Jonathan was, more than anything else, a publisher. He lived in the world of ideas and understood the value of them. In a career that spanned 50 years, he never wavered from his ideal, striving for a liberal sanity. At heart he was a pugilist, as a young boy with his fists, as a man with his ideas. Every encounter with Jon either expanded on the last conversation or picked up a new thread – the importance of the Enlightenment and England s role in it – being one of our last week-long conversations.

This would indicate that my interlocutor had a matter of great import to impart, not to be overheard. Perhaps he had heard something about Thabo Mbeki he had commissioned
The Dream Deferred from me or about matters of state that he wished to test. Perhaps an idea had come to him for a project he would like to involve me in, or another book he would like me to write, or a plan to save South African publishing, or an insight into global politics.

About 50km outside of Cape Town lies the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, nestled against vineyards and blue mountains that stretch to the sky. Here reside some of South Africa’s wealthiest individuals: all male, all Afrikaans – and all stinking rich. Johann Rupert, Jannie Mouton, Markus Jooste and Christo Weise, to name a few.
Julius Malema refers to them scathingly as ‘The Stellenbosch Mafia’, the very worst example of white monopoly capital. But who really are these mega-wealthy individuals, and what influence do they exert not only on Stellenbosch but more broadly on South African society?
Author Pieter du Toit begins by exploring the roots of Stellenbosch, one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa and arguably the cradle of Afrikanerdom. What network of boa
