After seemingly dying at the end of
Van Helsing Season 4, Julius (Aleks Paunovic) and Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) are back in the thick of the action for Episode 6 of the SYFY show s fifth and final season. The pair of fan favorites may have been able to stave off death for the time being, but that doesn t mean they re out of the woods just yet. In fact, they now find themselves under fire from someone named Nina a dangerous killer who is apparently really important to Julius. Awww, don t that just break your heart, folks?

It s wasn t much of a performance stretch for Paunovic, who admitted to
“Van Helsing” season-opener, 10 p.m., Syfy. After four seasons in a near-future world, this goes back to the roots of vampire-hunting: It starts its final season with three episodes set in old Romania. This opener was beautifully directed by Jonathan Scarfe, a gifted actor (and son of Canadian star Sara Botsford) who later will return to his role as Axel. Jack (Nicole Munoz) has been flung into the past, told only to “kill the Dark One.” That’s not easy, amid castle schemes.
“Great Performances: Beethoven in Beijing,” 9-10:30 p.m., PBS. When the “cultural revolution” raced through China in 1966, classical music collapsed. Violins were smashed, violinists were beaten; only six operas and two ballets all of them praising the government were approved. Then the Philadelphia Orchestra was somehow invited in 1973. Disputes would follow (including whether to do Beethoven’s Fifth), but it was a triumphant tour, shown via old film and current comments.

When Van Helsing returns tonight for its fifth and final season on Syfy, it will wrap up with the larger-than-life showdown between the Van Helsings and Dracula, between light and dark. So, will fans be satisfied?
Monsters & Critics was able to join a roundtable on Zoom that included Jonathan Scarfe (director, co-executive producer, and the role of Axel Miller), Tricia Helfer (Dracula), and Nicole Muñoz (Jack) to get their opinion on the beginning of the end as the first three episodes back delve into the backstory of both Dracula and the Van Helsing vampire hunters.
