Spanish hospitals on brink of collapse as COVID-19 cases explode Coronavirus cases in Spain have continued to rocket upwards, as the country registered its highest-ever number of daily cases on Friday: 40,197 infections in a single day. This exceeded a record set only two days earlier, on Wednesday, of 38,869 new cases. Thursday also saw exceptionally high figures, with 35,878 infections recorded in the official government count. Prior to the explosion of cases last week, the highest-ever number of daily infections had been recorded on October 30, with 25,592 new positive tests. As of Friday, a total of 2,252,164 coronavirus infections had been detected in Spain and 53,314 deaths.

The money raised at the auction will be split between the Uruguayan state and the heirs of the diver Héctor Bado, who led an effort in the 1990s to locate historical treasures from the HMS Agamemnon, once captained by Nelson, and the Spanish ship El Salvador. The auction, to be held in Montevideo in May, is the result of a series of court decisions and an agreement between the government and the right-holders to the treasure, given that Uruguayan law previously allowed for private parties to seek and claim bounty from the sea floor.

The surge in coronavirus cases in Spain is starting to have an impact on hospitalsâ ordinary activity. The clearest case is the Valencia region, where non-essential procedures including diagnostic tests and surgeries are being cancelled in order to focus resources on Covid-19 patients. In Catalonia and Galicia, hospitals are also feeling the strain and have begun to cancel procedures that are not considered vital. âThe forecasts are very bad, and the direction of the epidemiological curve is nearly vertical. If things keep going this way, in 15 days the hospitals will no longer be able to cope,â warned Javier GarcÃa FernÃ¡ndez, president of the Spanish Anesthesiology Society.
