Coined the “Hanoi Hilton” by American prisoner Robert Shuemaker, the Hoa Lo prison became synonymous with the POW plight during the war, and long after. American prisoners of war in the Hoa Lo prison were subjected to extreme torture and malnutrition during their captivity. Although a signatory of the Third Geneva Convention of 1949, which demanded “decent and humane treatment” of prisoners of war, North Vietnam employed severe torture methods, including sleep deprivation, malnutrition, beatings, hanging by ropes, locking in irons and prolonged solitary confinement.

What do Covid-19 vaccination and the stabbing death of a woman outside of her New York City apartment have in common? The bystander effect.
The bystander effect concept emerged after Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was stabbed to death in 1964. According to press coverage at the time, none of her neighbors came to her help despite being aware of what was happening. Although the coverage was later debunked, it gave rise to the bystander effect theory, which says that an individual witnessing someone being attacked is less likely to help the victim when there are other people around. Essentially, the thought is that someone else will take care of the victim; it’s not the individual’s problem. Of course, when everyone thinks
Few issues are as politicized and utilitarian as public education. That’s unfortunate. There is no lack of energy poured into the debate over school funding, teacher pay, and the level of federal involvement.
A recent example of the division in North Carolina occurred during a meeting of the State Board of Education on January 27, where Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson pushed back against proposed curriculum changes oriented toward more instruction on systemic racism and critical race theory. “I don’t think they’re for the benefit of the students. I think they’re for the benefit of those who have a political agenda,” Robinson said.

Submarine, EOD skippers chosen for Navy s prestigious Stockdale award Cmdr. Ken Kleinschnittger and Cmdr. Gary Montalvo The submarine and explosive ordnance disposal communities have produced the fleet s top skippers, who were chosen for the Navy s most prestigious leadership award.
Cmdr. Gary Montalvo, skipper of the attack submarine North Carolina, and Cmdr. Ken Kleinschnittger, former CO of EOD Mobile Unit 12, were chosen out of eight finalists for this year s award to represent Pacific Fleet and Fleet Forces Command respectively, the Navy announced Tuesday. The North Carolina is homeported in Pearl Harbor and the Dirty Dozen of EODMU 12 is based in Virginia Beach, Va.
