Tulsa To Ask Voters For Public Safety District

Tulsa To Ask Voters For Public Safety District The City of Tulsa hopes to use a new tax option to provide a more stable source of funding for public safety. After years of lobbying from Oklahoma’s municipal governments, the legislature finally gave cities the ability to ask voters for a dedicated property tax to support the cost of emergency services. Tulsa plans to put a measure on the ballot in August 2022, asking voters to convert five mills of property tax into the Public Safety District tax. City Finance Director James Wagner said it’s possible to collect $17 million a year from the tax, without increasing tax rates, by extending the repayment terms on existing bonds. Tulsa is repaying bonds that once were held for 20 years in as few as five years now.

Bynum Proposes Vote On Permanent Public Safety District In August 2022

Credit Tulsa Police Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum wants to put a permanent property tax for public safety on the ballot in August 2022. Bynum told city councilors Wednesday that’s his plan under a new state law allowing public safety districts, which cities can create to dedicate generally stable property tax revenue to their police and fire departments rather than just sales tax. Bynum’s proposal is for five mills roughly $75 a year for a house worth $150,000 but City Finance Director James Wagner said the repayment period for upcoming bond issues could be extended so property tax bills don’t go up.
