Commemorating 150 years of Barrow Shipyard Barrow shipyard – now owned and operated by BAE Systems Submarines – has proudly reached its 150th anniversary. We speak to two of the town s most prominent champions who reflect on the history, importance and positive impact that the shipyard has had on Barrow and its residents. Simon Fell, Member of Parliament for Barrow & Furness, talks about how the business and the town have always been inextricably linked. “Drive towards Barrow in any direction and the famous sheds where all the work is done loom into view, dominating the landscape, and it is not just the landscape that BAE dominates, but it is Barrow’s past and its future.
“We did a really big haul of the river that day and each had a canoe acting like a bumper truck, with kayaks all round it, picking the litter and we were all teams of less than six.
“So we were still being very Covid aware and I thought we had done well with our full two tubs.
“But then I came back and found an entire canoe of litter.
“We plan to do more litter picks this summer.”
