“It goes without saying that it will be most devastating to the family, colleagues and friends of Constable Northrup,” Ramer said in a statement. “We are doing everything we can to support them at this time.”
Toronto Police Association President Jon Reid tweeted: “Our thoughts & deepest sympathies are with PC Northrup’s family on the loss of a husband, father & son.”
It really made me think.

Why? Because in my view this senseless killing is likely a symptom of the rising anti-cop sentiment in Toronto and well beyond, coupled with weak politicians who enable all kind of illegal acts, punishing the lawful (with absurd COVID tickets for example) and giving the lawless a free pass. Shrieking activists likely the same who want the name of Dundas St. changed and who tried to prevent the Trinity Bellwoods encampment from being cleared demand at every opportunity to “defund the police.”
What they mean is that less money should be assigned to law enforcement and more to social service agencies to counsel criminals, or shoot them up with illegal drugs using clean needles or, I guess, get to the root of their bad behaviour.

TORONTO – A 31-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Const. Jeffrey Northrup.
The Toronto police officer was struck by a vehicle early Friday morning in what investigators have described as an “intentional and deliberate act.”
Interim Police Chief James Ramer says Northrup had been in the parking garage at Toronto City Hall, responding to reports of a robbery in progress.

Late Friday afternoon, Toronto Police said Umar Zameer was charged with murder in the death of Const. Jeffrey Northrup, who was run down by a vehicle early Friday in a parking garage at Toronto City Hall in what Chief James Ramer described as deliberate.

“It’s very early in the investigation, but based on the evidence we have at this time … it was a deliberate and intentional act,” Ramer said during a Friday morning press conference.
