Salt bins to be replenished after car flipped onto its roof on ice rink road

SALT heaps and salt bins are to be replenished in the district after a car crashed and flipped onto its roof on the road from Settle towards Kirkby Malham. Farmer Godfrey Haygarth, who farms at Springfield Farm, said the road called High Hill Lane, accessed through Upper Settle, was like sheet ice and the crashed vehicle, which snapped a telegraph pole in half, was blocking the road so he couldn t get to his animals. Other people who had children at school were unable to get past. The occupants of the vehicle were believed to be a mother with a baby and small child who was travelling from the Malham direction towards Settle. There were no reports of any injuries.

Pavements to be gritted tomorrow, county council promises

The reassurance comes following a complaint by a Skipton resident of Overdale Park. He said he was 74 and able-bodied, but had been struggling to walk along The Bailey all this week because of the icy conditions. He said he walks into town regularly to pay for his paper and collect fruit and vegetables, but said on Wednesday that it had taken him an hour. I ve lived in Skipton for 14 years and the pavements are the worst I have known them. There is quite a distance up The Bailey that is a solid sheet of ice. There has been no salt spread at all and some of my elderly neighbours cannot step outside.

In 2020 we’ve had to deal with distress that was unimaginable a year ago - and sadly, the much-needed festive break we were all planning for has now been abruptly changed or withdrawn. But if you think back over this year, you’ll realise you’ve learnt a great deal about how to be happier and calmer.
