Drinking the Knights Away: DiS meets James Mercer from The Shins / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

January 15th, 2007 You may have read part one already, but if not here s the skinny. Last year DiS went to a pub. We do that quite a lot, and probably talk about it even more than we do it. This time though we were answering the call of duty, to meet James Mercer from The Shins. DiS founder Sean Adams sat in a pub, in Shepherd’s Bush, with beer circles on some scribbled notes and a shaky Dictaphone in a sweaty palm to meet one of his heroes. Turned out James was one of the loveliest men to ever chew the fat (we re not talking pork scratchings!) with DiS, and in part two you will hopefully be teased further ahead of the release of their wondrous new album

These Patterned Local Linens Make Organic Homegoods Fun

Founded by sisters-in-law Marisa Kula Mercer and Sheila Mulvihill, the Pacific Northwest company ( ploverorganic.com) has long aimed to be a colorful alternative to the world of austere organic home goods. These days, Plover Organic’s cloud-soft sheets, brightly patterned linens, and edible flower seed packets are effective antidotes to the doldrums of home confinement.  “We’re all stuck inside. We’re all doing homeschool,” Kula Mercer says. “But you lay out a beautiful tablecloth and some fresh flowers and suddenly [home] feels like a really special space.” Handmade quilt ($325) Formerly a New York–based journalist, she moved to Portland in 2007 after marrying Shins front man James Mercer. She and her new sister-in-law, Mulvihill, started Plover Organic two years later, after they both had babies and found it impossible to create
