On Tuesday, our state will commemorate the 185th anniversary of Texas Independence (and Sam Houston s birthday and the Lone Star flag).
Texas is the lone sovereign republic to win independence from another country and join the United States. It became the 28th state in 1845.

The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed March 2, 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos by delegates from the Mexican State of Tejas. Texas separation from Mexico began. Independence was won 50 days later at the Battle of San Jacinto.

The building was originally the chapel of the Mission San Antonio de Valero, which had been founded between 1716 and 1718 by Franciscans. Before the end of the century, the mission had been abandoned and the buildings fell into partial ruin. After 1801 the chapel was occupied sporadically by Spanish troops. Apparently, it was during that period that the old chapel became popularly known as “the Alamo” because of the grove of cottonwood trees in which it stood.
James Bowie, popular hero of the Texas Revolution (1835–36) who is mainly remembered for his part in the Battle of the Alamo (February–March 1836). Bowie migrated with his parents to Missouri (1800) and then to Louisiana (1802). At 18 he left home, clearing land and sawing timber for a living.
