Ed Dunlop trained John Leeper – tipped by fromthehorsesmouth.info – was cut to 7-1 for the Cazoo Derby in June after victory in the Betway Fairway Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday under William Buick.
“That was nerve-racking. Training a horse named after one’s father puts a bit of pressure on the horse and everyone else. I’m thrilled we got through this stage,” said jubilant Dunlop.
John Leeper is named in honour of Dunlop’s father, John: “It was a very falsely run race. William said they trotted along and he was a little bit keen.

Jockey Billy Lee rides Sounds Of Spring (3.05) tipped each-way by fromthehorsesmouth.info and Trump Card (5.25) tipped to win at Navan on Saturday.
Course winner Sounds Of Spring carrying 8st 12lbs is expected to go well in the Bellinter 5 furlongs Handicap after finishing fourth of 14 in a Handicap in April.
Course and distance winner Trump Card carrying 9st 7lbs goes to post in the Troytown Bar Handicap over 1m 5f, noted when finishing second of 14 at Limerick in April.
Aidan Coleman is up on Judge Et Parti (3.25) at Bangor, tipped to land the Novices 3m Handicap Chase, after finishing third of 6 at Uttoxeter on May 1.
Sean Bowen completed his treble with a comfortable win for the Rebecca Curtis-trained Minella Bobo THERE was plenty of Pembrokeshire success as racing returned to Ffos Las Racecourse for the first time in a month. Jockey Sean Bowen rode a treble – and there were also doubles for trainers Peter Bowen and Rebecca Curtis. There were eight races in total, which surprisingly took place on good to soft ground, despite the deluge of rain in previous days. Sean Bowen took the opening novices’ hurdle over two miles and four furlongs with Equus Dancer, trained by his father Peter. The jockey followed up with a win on Lermoos Legend in the handicap chase over two miles, also for the Little Newcastle stable.
