PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Eagles have been slow to name quarterback Jalen Hurts the starter for next season, but their actions in the 2021 NFL draft signaled continued support as he enters a critical Year 2.
The Eagles could have stayed at No. 6 overall and selected Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. After trading back to No. 12 in a deal with the Miami Dolphins, they had the opportunity to take Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.
Philadelphia could have maneuvered into the back end of the second round or top of the third and pursued quarterbacks such as Florida s Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond of Texas A&M or Stanford s Davis Mills.

PHILADELPHIA - The work didn t end when the draft did for the Eagles personnel department which began to cobble together its undrafted free agency class Saturday night.
The biggest gets reported so far are former Wake Forest and Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman and a pair of lengthy receivers he can throw to: Florida s Trevon Grimes and Texas A&M s Jhamon Ausbon.
Newman, the former Wake Forest starter who transferred to Georgia only to opt out this past season because of COVID-19 concerns, was regarded as a draftable commodity by most and currently would fit in as the Eagles third quarterback behind second-year starter Jalen Hurts and veteran backup Joe Flacco.

The Eagles did not use one of their 2021 draft picks on a quarterback, but they will add at least one via undrafted free agency. Former Wake Forest and Georgia passer Jamie Newman will sign with Philadelphia, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.
Newman transferred from Wake Forest to Georgia but did not end up playing for the Bulldogs, opting out of last season. He worked as the Demon Deacons’ starter in 2019, throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. The 6-foot-4 passer did participate in the Senior Bowl, however.
Philly not selecting a quarterback clears the way for Jalen Hurts. While ownership was believed to be behind Hurts receiving a true opportunity this season rather than being pushed in a quarterback competition it was somewhat surprising the Eagles did not select a QB. Newman will join Hurts and Joe Flacco, whom the Eagles signed this offseason, on Philadelphia’s depth chart.
