WINNIPEG A road renewal project that cuts through the heart Winnipeg s North End has come under fire for not including bike lanes, and has the community rallying for design changes. Salter Street is set for millions of dollars’ worth in repairs and will dictate how North End residents will get around the community for a number of years. According to advocates, the choice to not include active transportation lanes in the design process is not only surprising, but dangerous. “Anyone that spends any time in this community realizes that people bike on this sidewalk (Salter Street) all the time. And what that is, it’s dangerous for the rider, dangerous for the people who are walking, and it’s unnecessary,” said Anders Swanson, executive director of the Winnipeg Trails Association.
WINNIPEG An army of volunteers is scouring the backcountry of Whiteshell Provincial Park for signs of 50-year-old Dan LeMay. The father of three from Grunthal, Man. disappeared Sunday evening. The RCMP said he was on his way back to Pinewood Lodge in the provincial park and was around ten minutes away when it is believed he ran out of fuel.

WINNIPEG The Downtown Winnipeg Biz has some cool new places for Winnipeggers to sit back and relax. Local artists have been crafting Snowfas – sofas carved out of snow.
(Source: Jamie Dowsett/ CTV News Winnipeg) Pamela Hardman, a spokesperson for the Downtown Winnipeg Biz, said the Snowfas were made by local artists in collaboration with Festival du Voyageur. There are seven Snowfas around the downtown area, which Hardman said she hopes will draw people in from the river walk and other parts of the city.

WINNIPEG At least one curling club in Winnipeg has decided to pull the plug on their season, citing the public health orders. Jason Shymanski, secretary with the Fort Garry Curling Club, confirmed the club is shutting down its ice plant for the year. “The news we got yesterday was unfortunate,” he said. “We were hoping when we first had to shut down in late October that we were going to be able to reopen, hopefully if the numbers went down, we’d be able to get the restrictions lifted.” “We held out as long as we could” Under the new public health orders which take effect on Feb. 12, indoor sporting facilities, such as rinks, can open at 25 per cent capacity including both staff and patrons, but only for one-on-one instruction. Athletes who are potential competitors for the summer or winter Olympic or Paralympic Games can train at indoor sporting facilities with safety measures in place.
