MOSCOW U.S. broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to order Russian authorities to refrain from enforcing fines on its Moscow bureau that would cause “irreversible harm.”
The U.S. news outlet has been heavily fined this year for what Russia says is its repeated failure to label itself as “performing the functions of a foreign agent.”

MOSCOW, April 16 (Reuters) - U.S. broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said late on Thursday its Moscow bureau had petitioned the European Court of Human Rights asking it to order Russian authorities to refrain from enforcing fines that would cause irreversible harm.
The U.S. multimedia news outlet has been heavily fined this year for what Russia says is its repeated failure to label itself as a media outlet performing the functions of a foreign agent.
RFE/RL says Russian authorities have the power to place it into insolvency and/or to block access to its media sites if the fines are unpaid and that Andrey Shary, its general director, faces the prospect of a prison sentence of up to two years and personal bankruptcy.

The Moscow-based Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is raising a case with the ECHR against Russian penalties that it says is part of a crackdown on press freedom.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was founded in the 1950 and broadcasts in 23 countries
US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) said late Thursday it was petitioning the European Court of Human Rights to block Russia from enforcing penalties on the broadcaster.
Russia s media watchdog Roskomnadzor has filed at least 390 violation cases against RFE/RL since October and is expected to announce more on Friday.
