BBC4 adds medical doc Extra Life

Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer was picked up by Cineflix yesterday UK pubcaster BBC4 has picked up medical science doc Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer from distributor Cineflix Rights, the day after the London-based outfit added the four-part series to its slate. The show, presented by historian David Olosuga and author Steven Johnson, examines four key steps in humanity’s containment of disease and how we have learned from previous pandemics. It focuses on one human medical innovation per episode, ranging from vaccines to simply washing our hands. The series is produced by Nutopia, the company founded by former BBC2 controller Jane Root, for the BBC and US pubcaster PBS.

U.K. prodco Nutopia’s new four-part series, Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer, has found a home on BBC4 and iPlayer. The series studies the science and medical innovations that conquered some of the world’s deadliest diseases and doubled life expectancies for many around the world. Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga (pictured; Civilisations, The Ghost Map, How We Got To Now) join forces to lead viewers across 300 years of medical innovation and go behind the scenes of modern medicine to meet the unsung heroes who are tackling COVID-19 and other public health threats. “The revolution in medicine and public health that has taken place over the past three centuries is one of the greatest achievements of all time,” Olusoga said in a statement. “The series is a history of unsung heroes and forgotten pioneers whose incredible stories deserve to be better known.”

Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer examines advances in public health UK distributor Cineflix Rights has added a forthcoming PBS science series from London-based production outfit Nutopia to its sales slate. Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer (4×60’) examines some of the medical advances that have changed the face of public health, spanning 300 years of medical study. This is the first collaboration between the two companies and forms part of Cineflix Rights’ springtime slate. Nutopia was founded by Jane Root, former president of Discovery Networks and controller of UK channel BBC2. It is known for relaxation series A World of Calm and The World According to Jeff Goldblum.
