A kayaker enjoys a paddle on the north lake at Mavora Lakes, a DOC camping area which more than 6000 people stay at each year. The Mavora Lakes Conservation Park is accessed via a 39km unsealed road off the Mossburn-Te Anau highway and is about a 90 minute drive from Te Anau and about two hours from Invercargill. The number of campers has remained steady in recent years, 6802 in 2017-18, 6541 in 2018-19 and 6577 in 2019-20, with peak times at summer holidays, Easter and Labour Weekend. The campers, when asked what they like about the place, highlight the outdoor activities, and the fact there’s no cell or internet coverage. It’s a place to unwind without screens.
