Fishermen in Shetland today welcomed the rejection of a deal with Norway.
The failure of the UK and Norway to strike a new fishing deal had been criticised by the UK industry, as it means fleets will have no access to Norway’s waters, known for their cod stocks. However, the Shetland Fishermen’s Association (SFA) said the deal had been brokered by the European Union and heavily skewed against the local pelagic and demersal fleets. SFA chief executive Simon Collins said: “This bring a long-awaited end to past practice in which the EU used to hand substantial amounts of Scottish quota to Norway largely to the benefit of a single foreign multinational that claimed to be English.

The failure of the UK government to seal a fishing quota deal with Norway â despite heralding a âhistoricâ Brexit agreement with the country last year â is a disaster that will have serious consequences, say fishery leaders.
âThis is actually a loss of real fishing opportunities,â said Barrie Deas, the chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermanâs Organisations, âand in that sense weâve gone backwardsâ.
The North Atlantic is key to UK fishing interests because it provides a large stock of cod and haddock for the nationâs fish and chip shops.

Fishing crews have been disastrously let down by the government s failure to reach a deal with Norway, UK Fisheries chief executive has said.
