TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) Two members of the Tupelo City Council lost their bids for re-election Tuesday in municipal primary runoffs.
Republican Janet Gaston defeated Ward 6 Councilman Mike Bryan with 60 percent of the vote. She will face Democrat Rasheeda Iyanda in the June general election.
Democrat Rosie Jones beat Ward 7 Councilman Willie Jennings with 55 percent of the vote. Jones will replace Jennings on the City Council since all the candidates in that race ran as Democrats.
TUPELO ⢠City Council incumbents in Ward 6 and Ward 7 were ousted in primary runoffs Tuesday, while Chad Mims narrowly won the Republican primary for an open seat in Ward 1.
Victories by women in Ward 6 and Ward 7 ensure that at least three members of the Tupelo City Council over the next four years will be women, a historic share of representation for female officeholders.
Mims defeated Amanda Angle, receiving 51.1% of the votes to 48.9% for Angle. Angle performed better than her primary day totals to make the runoff race close.
In Ward 6, Janet Gaston defeated fourth-term incumbent Mike Bryan on Tuesday night to win the Republican nomination, capturing a resounding 60% of the vote, with Bryan earning just over 39% of the vote.
TUPELO ⢠Some voters in the All America City will cast ballots on Tuesday to decide who should represent them in City Hall over the next four years.
Voters in three of the cityâs wards â Ward 1, 6 and 7 â have an opportunity to participate in runoff elections to decide who should sit on the Tupelo City Council over the next four years.
Two of the races, however, will not be completely settled on Tuesday night.
In Ward 1, for example, Amanda Angle and Chad Mims are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Geraldine Brinkley, the Democratic nominee, in the general election on June 8.
TUPELO ⢠A runoff election on Tuesday will see two incumbents on the ballot facing credible challengers, while a pair of newcomers vie for an open seat.
Voters will be going to the polls in Ward 1, Ward 6 and Ward 7, with polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
All of these runoffs come after the April 6 primaries saw no candidates in these wards win more than 50% of the vote.
Ward 1
With no incumbent in the race, Amanda Angle and Chad Mims are each hoping to win an open seat on the City Council, but only one of them can win the Republican primary runoff.
Tupelo voters in three wards will return to the polls Tuesday, April 27, to decide runoffs for city council. These are important elections, with council members holding sway over key decisions that impact day-to-day life in our city.
