The Athletic’s Mike Lombardi has taken a lot of heat over the past couple of days as he’s dug his heels in stating that the 49ers listened to the pressure from social media which is a very real thing and teams absolutely put stock into and switched their pick from Mac Jones to Trey Lance.
Do you realize how that sounds when you say that out loud?
It was always going to be Trey Lance. Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have said as much, with their zeroed-in focus dating back to January. And yet, some of those same people who thought it was going to be Jones continue to purport a baseless opinion, even in the face of a clearly opposing reality.
Eight Penn State football lettermen
joined NFL teams this weekend. With the 2021 NFL Draft now all wrapped up, it’s never too early to turn toward 2022’s main event.
Penn State offensive tackle Rasheed Walker is projected as a first-round pick by many “draft experts” in their way-too-early 2022 mock drafts, which would make him the first Nittany Lion lineman drafted in the first round since Levi Brown in 2007.
Without further ado, here’s where some draft analysts have Walker landing during the 2022 draft cycle.

Many felt the San Francisco 49ers were targeting Mac Jones of Alabama when they traded up to the No. 3 overall pick on March 26. They were wrong. Trey Lance of North Dakota State was the target, per general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Jones was a safety net behind Lance and Justin Fields of Ohio State.
At least, that is what we have been told since the draft.
Shanahan started doing a deep dive into Lance s film in January, and the more he watched, the more he got excited. During his vacation in Cabo San Lucas, he spent time reviewing the young quarterback s film, sending his notes to Lynch, sometimes in the middle of the night. Shanahan liked Jones too and was fine drafting him at No. 12 their pre-trade draft slot. But Lance, on the other hand, was worth trading up to ensure the 49ers got their guy.

The 2021 NFL Draft is in the books, so naturally, it’s time for a way-too-early 2022 Mock Draft.
Why do we do this exercise? For starters, it’s fun, and fans devour it. When we did this last April after the 2020 NFL Draft, we correctly projected 13 of the 32 first-round picks, including direct hits on Justin Fields to the Bears and Micah Parsons to the Cowboys.
But we also do it because it starts the process of analyzing the upcoming college football season. More than anything, it begins our annual deep dive into figuring out who needs what in the NFL.
