2020 started off remembering a hero in the Coastal Bend; Corpus Christi police officer Alan McCollum’s life was tragically taken following a traffic stop on Highway 358. McCollum and another officer were struck by a drunk driver.

Raleigh, N.C. Hospitals across North Carolina are continuing to fill up as COVID-19 cases rise, and smaller, rural hospitals are especially stressed in areas dealing with critical community spread.
“We had our highest watermark yesterday with 54 patients with COVID, in addition to the regular patients we have,” said Jason Cox, chief operating officer at UNC Health Southeastern, in Lumberton. “It’s certainly the most we’ve ever seen hospitalized here in Robeson County.”
Cox says the hospital is at 93% capacity, and its intensive care unit is at maximum capacity, with about half being COVID patients. But the biggest challenge could be personnel.

Multiple residents of Mennonite Memorial Home and staff at MMH received their first doses of a covid-19 vaccine today (Dec. 22), according to Jason Cox.
Vaccines will be administered at Hilty Home, Pandora, on Dec. 23, and at Willow Ridge on Dec. 29, according to Cox.
Cox told the Icon that pharmacists from the CVS Pharmacy located in Breese Road, Lima, were on the MMH campus today giving the shots.

The federal government has contracted with two nationwide pharmacies in order to roll-out mass distribution of these vaccines as quickly as possible once available. MHCO is partnered with CVS Health/Omnicare Pharmacy for our vaccine distribution.
Inmates Face Wildfires Then Prejudice

Earlier this year, as wildfires ravaged the state, prisoners from Warner Creek Correctional Facility were sent to help professional firefighters as part of a 70-year-old program which offers prisoners the opportunity to learn a trade, while also providing extra help to the firefighters already in place.
ABC News covered the story of the 20 prisoners from Warner Creek Correctional Facility, who worked the fires near Paisley, Oregon, in September. One of the prisoners, Eddie Correia, age 36, told ABC News, “This gives us a different opportunity, rather than going back to something that we already know, which is guns, gangs, violence and drugs.”
