Pricing carbon: Trade-offs and opportunities for India

Reconciling India’s Climate and Industrial Targets: A Policy Roadmap. Introduction India has performed remarkably well in terms of its climate trajectory over the past decade. From 2005 to 2014, the country’s GHG-emission intensity declined by 21 percent. [1] According to Climate Transparency, India is the only G20 nation on-track to achieve the targets under the Paris Agreement. [2] One of the key, albeit unfortunate, reasons behind India’s climate success is the underperformance of its manufacturing sector. Since industries constitute approximately one-fourth of the economy’s total GHG emissions, [3] the sector’s sluggish growth has led to only a moderate increase in industrial power demand and emission-intensity of the gross domestic product (GDP).

NREL details cost declines needed for long-duration storage to displace nuclear, gas with CCS

Dive Brief: More research is needed to understand the economics of long-duration and seasonal storage technologies to make sure they can play a role in decarbonizing the electric grid, according to a new article published in the journal Nature Energy. The article, written by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) research engineer Omar J. Guerra, builds on a previous study that looked at the cost-effectiveness of deploying long-duration energy storage (LDES) in conjunction with renewable energy to decarbonize the grid. That study, published in March in Nature Energy, found that LDES storage costs and discharge efficiency need to improve in order to displace nuclear power or natural gas power plants as sources of grid reliability.
