The new base, which Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced in his Budget, will be home to 750 senior civil servants. Heather Scott, leader of Darlington Council, described it as fantastic news for the area . Peter Gibson, Darlington s Conservative MP, said it showed the government had faith and trust in the town. The chancellor had been approached by civic leaders from across the north, with Bradford, Leeds and Newcastle also thought to have been in the running for the move.

Plea to extend furlough amid dire situation with unemployment

NORTH East leaders have called on the Chancellor to address the growing unemployment situation and extend furlough, ahead of Wednesday s Budget. Stockton North MP Alex Cunningham has called on the Chancellor to urgently address the dire situation of growing unemployment in his constituency. Newly released claimant figures from the House of Commons Library shows that there are now 4,510 people claiming unemployment related benefits in Stockton North – an increase of 1,465 compared to the same period in 2020. This amounts to 7.9 per cent of 16 to 64 year olds in the constituency – 1.5 per cent higher than the UK equivalent claimant rate. Of these 975 are aged 18 to 24 – a rise of 340 on January 2020.

Picture: SARAH CALDECOTT LABOUR has called for £1bn to be invested in 100,000 start-ups across the country in the next five years, strategically focusing on new businesses outside London and the South-East. The funding for start-up loans would prioritise new businesses in places that have experienced low levels of finance. They party said start-ups in the North-East have been particularly underfunded, with figures from the British Business Bank showing: l In 2019, new businesses in the North-East received just one per cent of equity investment in the UK while London received 66 per cent of investment.
