Luca has arrived online, and we re already applying a healthy schmeer of zinc to our noses. It s kind of hard not to think of summer vacation when watching the latest round of footage for director Enrico Casarosa s Italian Riviera-set adventure about two young sea monsters leaving the comfort of the ocean to explore the endless joys of the surface world (like Vespas and gelato!).
Newfound friends, the skittish Luca (
Room s Jacob Tremblay), and the more carefree Alberto (
Shazam! s Jack Dylan Grazer) may look like a pair of normal boys when they re out of the water, but if even a drop of water hits their skin, they start sprouting fins and scales. It s a rather monstrous secret they have to keep from the residents of the seaside town of Portorosso. While on dry land, the amphibious duo befriend a young girl named Giulia Marcovaldo (Emma Berman).
The team behind
Luca were facing a unique challenge: water. It wasn’t a matter of making the water in the upcoming Pixar film look realistic and detailed Pixar animators could probably create photorealistic water in their sleep. It was a matter of making it
less realistic.
It’s a strange problem for Pixar to have, right? The animation studio had perfected 3D animation to such a degree that their films have started to look almost

Luca dives deep into this coming-of-age story.with sea monsters. The movie, which will stream exclusively on Disney+ for all subscribers beginning June 18, 2021, showcases one incredible summer in the Italian seaside town of Portorosso-seen through the eyes of a sea monster named Luca. Along with the new footage, a poster has also been revealed that should have audiences and Pixar fans excited to return to the wonderful imagination of the award-winning animation studio.
Pixar looks like it has another charmer on its hands with
Luca, a coming-of-age fantasy set in the Italian Riviera. The feature directorial debut of
Enrico Casarosa, who worked on previous Pixar films such as
Up and
La Luna,
Luca is loosely based on Casarosa’s own childhood growing up alongside the sunny Italian Riviera. Sans sea monsters, of course. Watch the new official
