In the closest game of the 2021 season, the Northern Mystics have beaten The Good Oil Tactix 53-52, with the heart-stopping clincher scored in the final seconds.
The Auckland crowd erupted as Mystics shooter Grace Nweke snatched a long lob from player of the match Peta Toeava between the arms of the two Tactix defenders, and slotted the ball in just before the clock ran out.
But perhaps the intensity of the game – especially in the final quarter – shouldn’t have come as a great surprise, considering the last three matches between these two sides have all been decided by just one goal.
The Mystics went into Monday night’s match on the back of their first win of the season, over the Southern Steel, while the Tactix were looking for their first win, after losing to the Steel and the Stars. They didn’t make the best of starts in pursuit of that goal, however, turning the ball over twice in the opening three minutes and quickly falling behind 5-1. Much has been made of the Tactix’ defensive duo, Burger and Watson, but they were given the run around by fellow Silver Fern Bailey Mes and Nweke in the opening quarter. The Mystics came out looking to put plenty of defensive pressure on their potentially fragile opponents and the Tactix certainly had to work hard for every goal as the lead grew as large as eight.

The Stars ground out a tight
first half in the Anzac Day outing before bursting away in
the second half, the Tactix unable to stay with the pace as
the home side romped home in style with a strong second 30
minutes.
