THE majority of construction workers are not paying into a pension plan and face a “black hole” in retirement, Unite warned today.
Following a freedom of information (FOI) request to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the union revealed that just 36 per cent of the construction workforce – 797,000 employees – are known to be paying into a pension scheme.
The union stressed the issue was likely to hit blue-collar workers harder, as about half are trapped in “bogus” self-employment and therefore excluded from the auto-enrolment state pension scheme.
Unite warned that, even with a private pension, a self-employed worker would be very unlikely to avoid poverty in retirement as there are no employer contributions to such pensions.
