Southend schools could close for an extra week to fight Covid | Clacton and Frinton Gazette

SOUTHEND schools could be closed for at least a week extra after the Christmas holidays, the Echo can reveal. The move comes as the borough - along with the majority of south Essex - continues to battle soaring coronavirus infection rates, which have seen Southend, Basildon and Castle Point join the top 12 worst-infected Covid areas in England. Cabinet office minister Michael Gove said the Government hopes the staggered re-opening of schools will go ahead in January 4 as planned, with years 11 and 13 returning as normal while the majority of secondary pupils would start the term online. It is hoped this will allow headteachers to roll out mass testing of children and staff.

Following an announcement by Michael Gove, only primary school pupils and students in Year 11 and 13, plus the children of key workers, will return to classrooms from January 4. However, all other year groups will be required to stay at home and will be taught remotely. The government has said the staggered return will allow for schools to prepare for mass Covid-19 testing in a bid to reduce the number of students sent home to isolate.
