Star Spangled Salute: A Veteran Helping Homeless Veterans

Posted By: JJ Hayes December 17, 2020 @ 3:47 am Blogs, JJ Hayes Show Page     Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy Veteran Anthony Cosby.  Anthony started a company “Drive Like You Stole It” and the idea is simple, for every item sold, another is donated to organizations serving over 40,000 homeless veterans in this country.  Of all the things Anthony sells, socks are the big draw. Anthony says it breaks his heart to see homeless Veterans and he wants to get them on their feet.  Take them from homelessness to home to career to productive veteran in their community.  Anthony is getting help from Marine Veteran Jeremy Williams.  The two say, think of the socks as a conversation starter, a gateway to get the Veterans connected with the services they need.  Thank you Anthony and Jeremy for being a light and THANK YOU for your service.

Photo courtesy Trailly Holland While most teachers have already determined their students’ final grades for the semester, others are working to help kids catch up.  Both Gainesville City and Hall County schools are offering the last few days before winter break as a time for makeup assignments and tutoring for those who need a little extra support.  Kevin Bales, Hall’s assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, said while a lot of virtual learning students have flourished in academics this semester, many are behind.

Wednesday, Dec. 16, will be the last day of face-to-face instruction, the district says. District officials say an increase in COVID-19 cases and exposures in Gainesville and Hall County, as well as other locations where staff live, have meant the system has “reached a tipping point” and is unable to provide coverage in all of its major departments.

Gainesville City Schools to call off face-to-face learn

Add the Gainesville City School System to the list of public school districts altering in-person learning schedules because of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the area. Superintendent Jeremy Williams announced Tuesday morning that the last day for students in a face-to-face format before the holiday break will be Wednesday, Dec. 16.  Due to the increase of COVID-19 cases and exposures in Gainesville City, Hall County, and other locations our employees reside, we have reached a tipping point where we are no longer able to provide coverage in all of our major departments (school nutrition, transportation, classrooms, nurses, etc.), Williams wrote in a statement.
