The pandemic has meant a torrid 12 months for food to go, and the sector is not yet out of the woods. According to the new Lumina Intelligence UK Food To Go Market Report 2021, food-to-go sales plummeted 45.5% last year, taking its market value down to £11.6bn.
Even with lockdown restrictions eased, and the vaccination rollout progressing at full steam, the market is expected to recover to only 72% of its 2019 value by the end of the year.
But the report also highlights growth opportunities for businesses that can adapt to a post-pandemic landscape and cater for new consumer habits that are here to stay.
Here is the first look inside the new German Doner Kebab (GDK) Restaurant ahead of its opening. Work on the £500,000 restaurant in Blackburn began last September and this month staff were on site taking part in training. The venture has created 50 new roles. The 101-seater restaurant is due to open soon but when it does it will only be serving take outs (no deliveries) until May 17. There are no plans for outdoor seating. The new restaurant is the brand’s 56th site in the UK. The GDK restaurant takes up most of the ground floor area of the building and includes a prayer room. Another restaurant based next door to the GDK is also being planned but details for this are yet to be revealed.
