New York City residents, who were bracing for a winter storm during a critical moment in the pandemic, woke to more snow than the area saw all last winter.
On Wednesday, before the snow started falling, Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “We want people to take precautions because they need to take the storm seriously.”
What to know:
The National Weather Service suggested that snow accumulations in New York City could end up on the low end of the initial forecasts of eight to 12 inches. As of midnight, Central Park had gotten 6.5 inches of snow and sleet, the Weather Service said.

A major snowstorm hit the US east coast during the early hours, creating extra challenges in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic and a mass vaccination rollout taking place across the region.
The winter storm, moving over New York, Pennsylvania and other northeastern states, leaves millions facing more than a foot of snow a week before Christmas, potentially disrupting coronavirus testing and delaying holiday deliveries.
It also left more than 60 million people under bad weather warnings from Maine to South Carolina.
New York City, if hit as badly by the storm as predicted, would be facing the most snow from one storm in more than four years, after it was hit with two feet in January 2016.

By mid-afternoon, the Nor easter had brought a wintry mix to Washington and wind-whipped snow to New York City, parts of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as it threatened a swath of the country that is home to more than 50 million people.
The sprawling system could dump up to 60cm of snow in an area stretching from eastern Pennsylvania to New York s Catskill Mountains, with less amounts of 30cm or more in the rest of the north-east, forecasters said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A winter storm that has blasted the U.S. Northeast with snow, rain and gusty winds was likely to dump a foot (30 cm) or more of snow on parts of New England before heading out to sea on Thursday.
The first major snowstorm of the season forced much of the population to obey stay-at-home coronavirus orders, but also disrupted travel, possibly including distribution of the new COVID-19 vaccine.
By early Thursday morning, the storm had dumped more snow on New York City than all of last year’s winter storms combined, the National Weather Service said.
NEW JERSEY (WABC) New Jersey is under a state of emergency as several inches of snow fell Wednesday and into the early morning hours on Thursday. Snowplows were out in full force with a cleanup effort.
The state of emergency was set to expire at 10 a.m., except in Passaic, Bergen, Essex, Union, and Hudson counties where it will continue until 1 p.m. Whatever melts may refreeze overnight, so we want everyone to be cautious when venturing out, Governor Phil Murphy said on Thursday morning.
