WASHINGTON – Thirty-five Republicans joined Democrats Wednesday in passing a bill to create a bipartisan, independent commission to thoroughly investigate the Capitol riot Jan. 6, giving hope to backers it might also pass the Senate despite Republican Leader Mitch McConnell s opposition.
The bill creating the panel would give the commission subpoena power to call witnesses and produce a report by Dec. 31. Modeled after the widely hailed, independent panel that investigated the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, this commission would be charged with scrutinizing what provoked a pro-Trump mob to assault the Capitol and what can be done to prevent another attack.

Senate Budget Committee Chair Bernie Sanders, who could play an outsized role in passing President Joe Biden’s next spending package, says he opposes restoring the full federal deduction for state and local taxes.
“You have got to make it clear which side you are on, and you can’t be on the side of the wealthy and the powerful if you’re really going to fight for working families,” Sanders, I-Vt., told Axios on Monday.
Several studies show most of the benefits of repealing the Republican tax law’s $10,000 deduction cap on state and local taxes would go to wealthier taxpayers. But it has a different impact in high tax states such as New Jersey, where many middle-class homeowners would benefit.
