KNBN NewsCenter1 May 18, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. The commission has given final approval of an ordinance that regulates open burning. The ordinance prohibits igniting burn barrels in accordance with the National Weather Service when it declares the Grassland Fire Danger Index to be in the very high or extreme in areas across Pennington County. The exceptions are land in the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District, state and any land that’s federal or state-owned, as well as any unincorporated municipality. Burn permits are required in the Black Hills Fire Protection District. The ordinance is automatically suspended when the fire index goes below the very high category.
