Gerald Brady must resign Delaware legislators emails must be public

There is no room for slurs, for degrading language or for racism.  There is no room for the language used by Rep. Gerald Brady in a June email exchange with an out-of-state advocate about legislation to protect sex workers.  “Is the dude basically saying, if we provide free [sex acts] for Uncle Pervie there will be few rapes and chink broads will be shipped in CONEX containers to the Port of Wilmington??” Brady wrote to the advocate in an email sent from his official government address. The language is intolerable. Brady s decision not to seek re-election next year, reported earlier this week, is an attempt at recompense for this grievous error but it doesn t go far enough.

On Monday, one of their longest serving legislators announced he would not be running for reelection. Rep. Gerald Brady (D-Del.) expressed he did not believe he could represent his constituents in good faith going forward after he accidentally sent an email about decriminalizing sex work and used a racial slur to refer to Chinese women. The email was meant for a private individual, but Brady sent it to a sex work advocacy group instead. The House Ethics Committee declined to investigate Brady. However, they recommended sensitivity training for him and all other members in the chamber.

Delaware House lawmaker won t seek reelection after using racist, sexist slur

A state House lawmaker in Delaware who made a racist comment in an email announced on Monday that he will not seek reelection, the same day that the state’s Democratic leaders indicated they would not initiate an ethics investigation that could have led to his ouster.   Rep. Gerald Brady (D), who represents Wilmington, made the comment in an email on June 27 that was meant for an unidentified person but was ultimately sent to an advocate for decriminalizing prostitution, The Associated Press reported. Brady pressed “reply” when he meant to forward the email to a different person who he was asking for input.
