Up to 100 more families seeking help from SVP

The numbers seeking help this Christmas from Society of St Vincent de Paul Gorey has increased significantly, with between 75 and 100 more families needing assistance this year. As the volunteers get set for a busy period on the ground, mostly giving out food vouchers, President of the Gorey branch Gerard Murphy said that although it was expected that the demand for services now would be greater, the people of Gorey have stepped up to the mark and been very generous in their response. I ve been the president for three years now and in the normal course of events we would deal with anywhere between 280-300 families in a year. This year we ve seen a noticeable and substantial increase in that figure and it has gone up by about 75-100 families than in normal times. A lot of people contacting us have never felt the need to contact us before but are doing so for support as a result of the pandemic. I m not surprised by the increase, we re living in exceptional and extraordinary times

Arlene Kayne is named Sparta Citizen of the Year Sparta.
