MCG, Chadstone Virus Case Sparks Test Push

MCG, Chadstone Virus Case Sparks Test Push Tens of thousands of cricket fans and Boxing Day shoppers are being asked to get tested and self-isolate, following Victoria’s first mystery COVID-19 case in more than two months. Health authorities are scrambling to find the source, with a man in his 30s catching the virus after attending the sales at Chadstone Shopping Centre on December 26 and the Boxing Day Test at the MCG the following day. Chadstone and the MCG, billed as the largest shopping centre and sports stadium in the country, have now been listed as possible transmission sites. It presents a major challenge to Victoria’s bolstered testing and contact tracing network, with the state’s COVID response commander Jeroen Weimar describing it as a “needle in a haystack exercise”.

Businessman Garry Allan Carter joins rush of capital into large-format, convenience retail sectors

Share A convicted former criminal has paid $46 million – $1 million above the expected price – for the Homebase Wagga retail centre in regional NSW in an early indication of the rush this year to put money into large-format and convenience-anchored malls. Property records show Homebase Wagga was acquired by Metro Diversified Property Management, a company wholly owned and solely directed by Garry Allan Carter. Homebase in Wagga Wagga sold on a yield of 7.4 per cent.  Mr Carter, a corporate high-flyer in the 1980s and 1990s who was named Business Review Weekly s property businessman of the year in 1985, was sentenced to four years in prison in 1995 after he pleaded guilty to three counts of improperly using his position as a director of ATS Resources (later renamed Entity Group) to gain an advantage for himself and companies associated with him.

With no further context, he sounds clever and quirky, with a distinctive sense of humor. But man, is there more to his story. And though he shuffled off this mortal coil three years ago at age 69, his inspirational and colorful legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him and in new fans who are yet discovering his music and writing.
