Sealey, as well as Sgt. Steven Galvin, who did not fire a gun, are on paid administrative leave while Oregon State Police investigates the shooting. According to state police, Salem police officers and firefighters responded around 5:15 p.m. to reports of a suicidal man who had injured himself. Firefighters arrived at the scene before police, and Viertel threatened them with a gun, a state police news release said. After officers arrived, Viertel confronted them, according to the state police. He was still armed, and Sealey, the Salem officer, shot him. He died at the scene.

Police said they responded to reports of gunshots at a 7-Eleven store in the 1900 block of North Lombard Street about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and found Michael Arrington wounded from gunfire. Medics tried to help Arrington, but he died shortly after being taken to a hospital. Police said Arrington had been shopping at the store when he was shot. Investigators have not said whether anyone has been arrested in the shooting. They also have not released any information about a suspect or suspects.

A Keizer man died Thursday afternoon and two others were seriously injured, after they crashed into an oncoming semi truck on a Clackamas County road. A news release from Oregon State Police said Richard Russell, 84, was driving his Ford Explorer on Meridian Road, in a rural area south of Canby and east of Woodburn. Russell was turning onto OR-211 when he pulled into the path of a semi truck, according to state police.
