United Way names Jenni Carr 2020 Advocate of the Year

Carr has been involved with the United Way for nearly four years. “I’m grateful to be a part of this community where people believe in the amazing work of the United Way and to join the long line of other incredible Bartholomew County Advocates of the Year,” Carr said. United Way Volunteer Action Center Director Alicia Monroe announced the award during UWBC’s virtual annual meeting. It recognizes those who “use their voice to educate and empower fellow community members to get involved.”

Bartholomew County residents are invited to watch their email and social media pages for a plethora of materials that celebrate the impact their partners had in 2020. UWBC is also saluting its 2020 award winners. The United Way of Bartholomew County kicked off the celebration Monday with a video announcing Diane and Patrick Ward and their family as the winners of the Individual Give Award. Enkei was recognized as the Corporate Give Award winner. Mary Beth Wert was named Volunteer of the Year and Jenni Carr is Advocate of the Year. The Live United Award, the highest honor given by UWBC, went to Columbus Regional Health.

Throughout 2020, parents and teachers were worried about the loss of educational opportunities caused by the pandemic, but a comprehensive research by the University of Newcastle has found there was very little difference in student achievement between 2019 and 2020. Students in Year 3 and 4 from 62 schools in NSW were tested in 2019, and 51 of those students were re-tested for a second time in 2020. The study focused on the impact of the pandemic on student achievement in mathematics and reading and took into account wellbeing and attitudes toward schooling. The evidence was released in a report today titled, ‘Evaluating the Impact of COVID-19 on NSW Schools.’

The University of Newcastle, in partnership with the University of Wollongong (UOW), has been selected by the NSW Department of Education to deliver a first-of-its-kind professional learning program for middle leaders in NSW public schools. Researchers from UOW and University of Newcastle will work with the NSW School Leadership Institute to co-design and deliver a world class program that is evidence based, accessible across different geographical locations and will cater to the different needs of diverse schools and middle leaders.
