ACROSS AMERICA The gift a Waukesha, Wisconsin, woman gave her mother-in-law held the promise of life.
It was a single kidney bean in a box, a symbol of the much-better gift that radio host Elizabeth Kay wanted to give her mother-in-law, who learned the week of Christmas that she was in stage 4 kidney failure and needed a transplant.

ACROSS AMERICA Most of you boys and girls out there understand the Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus you see in the malls and elsewhere are just stand-ins because the real deals are busy at the North Pole loading the sleigh and fueling up the reindeer, right?

WALTHAM, MA A sign near the corner of Church and Main streets announces that Peshwari Kebab is coming soon. The Pakistani restaurant is set to open early next year in the space that was once home to the Common Cafe, if all goes well.
Owner and manager Mahboob Ali Khan said he and his two partners own another restaurant in Worcester together. He said that restaurant has been so successful, even amid pandemic, they wanted to extend their affordable halal food to Waltham. The sizable Muslim community in the city drew them to the Watch City.
