Obituary: Mr. Thomas Lanier Black

Thomas Black died on Feb. 4, 2021 at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville. He was born on Sept. 15, 1941.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 30 years, Martha Crouch Black; their son, George Edward Crouch V and his wife Allison June Crouch; and two grandsons, Ward and Jones Crouch.
Thomas graduated from the University of Georgia in 1963 with a degree in Landscape Design. He interned at Callaway Gardens before serving four years in the United States Navy, stationed in Norfolk and the Mediterranean. Thomas later joined the Peace Corps and served 2 years in Nigeria and participated in an exchange program in Sweden.

Four individuals face murder charges under indictments returned by a Bulloch County grand jury earlier this month. The total number of homicide cases now awaiting court action because of violent deaths that occurred in Bulloch County, including Statesboro, is 15.
That count, which includes some unindicted cases and even some for which arrests have been made since the grand jury met, is included in a total of 27 homicide cases pending in the four-county Ogeechee Judicial Circuit, said District Attorney Daphne Totten. Georgia continues to see good news and bad news in the pandemic in lower new COVID-19 infections but more than 100 new deaths on Thursday.
Georgia suffered 107 new deaths to reach 14,989 with 2,139 new cases for 812,612, the Department of Public Health reported.
Richmond County had 49 new cases for 18,538 total and Columbia County saw 13 new for 10,434. All other counties had four new cases or fewer: three in Burke for 1,658, four in McDuffie for 1,570, one in Jefferson for 1,534, two in Lincoln for 485, one in Warren for 359 and one in Glascock for 139. Unchanged were Screven County at 776, Jenkins County at 700 and Taliaferro County at 94.
Richmond County suffered a new death for 347 total, Jefferson County lost two patients for 53 and Screven County had a new death for 17, with a death in Aiken raising the area s toll to 915.
