ANGOLA — Now that she’s no longer the Steuben County Highway engineer, the county is entering into a contract with Jen Sharkey so she can continue to serve as needed.
ANGOLA — Steuben County’s highway engineer is leaving for a new career opportunity, it was announced during Tuesday’s meeting of the Steuben County Council.
ANGOLA â The Steuben County Highway Department will continue to evaluate its winter treatment mix, but for now will stay with the formula thatâs been used a few years.
The Highway Department treats roads with a mix thatâs two parts sand and one part salt, said Steuben County Highway Engineer Jen Sharkey.
The county uses this mix because of the cost of salt, which if a pure mix of salt were the only treatment, it would cost $820 per 10-ton load, she said at Tuesdayâs meeting of the Steuben County Board of Commissioners.
The current mixture of 2:1 sand to salt costs about $320 per 10-ton load. If the county were to go with 1:1, it would be $435 per 10 tons.

ANGOLA â A rather inconspicuous bridge in Steuben County farm country is going to be replaced as part of the Community Crossings projects awarded funding recently.
The bridge, known as Bridge 17, that spans Pigeon Creek on Hanselman Road will be replaced to the tune of $720,000.
âTo remove the load posting and increase capacity of the bridge to full legal weight limits, the bridge will be replaced to provide appropriately-sized beams for current design standards,â said Jen Sharkey, Steuben County Highway engineer.
The U.S. Department of Transportation mandated that load rating processes be consistent across the state.
âThis resulted in a more comprehensive load rating analysis program for Indiana that requires input from additional bridge elements when calculating the maximum allowable bridge load,â Sharkey said.
