McGUIRE RESIGNATION
The way Eddie McGuire reacted to the Collingwood racism review report should have been an “ah-ha” moment to Australia. Because this is the way we have been handling racism for years. McGuire was just doing what we all have done. I honestly feel the club and McGuire are probably sincere about trying to deal with it but have truly not understood the reality of “walking in other’s shoes”. This is a great challenge for all of us.

A few years back, Israel Folau gave a confronting opinion on gay people â and his career in major football codes was as good as over. Now, a lifeline back into rugby league is being given a fine-tooth comb scrutiny (âFolau to agree to social media terms in $1m Dragons offerâ, February 3). What on earth does an ability to cleverly pass a lump of leather have to do with Folauâs narrow, though not unique, views on homosexuality? Football has produced its share of louts, partner bashers and sexual abusers, some of whom have somehow been allowed to tip-toe back into the game.

The Prime Minister is not invited to speak at a UN climate change summit because Australia lacks a strong enough climate policy (“UN defends excluding Morrison from climate summit, Canberra livid with Johnson over snub”, smh.com.au, December 11). Is he spurred to commit to stronger action? No, as it isn’t important to speak at “some international summit”. He claims to only seek approval from the Australian people, not any wider audience. The Australian people will be wise to remember this at the next federal election. Not just “Australia first” but “Australia alone”.
