Andrew Boesenecker to take Jeni Arndt s seat in Colorado legislature

A vacancy committee selected Andrew Boesenecker to fill Fort Collins Mayor-elect Jeni Arndt s former seat in the Colorado House of Representatives. The House District 53 seat represents the west half of Fort Collins. Arndt, a Democrat, won reelection to the seat in 2020 but resigned earlier this month after winning the Fort Collins mayoral election. In occasions where a state legislator can t finish their term, a vacancy committee made up of members of that legislator s political party selects a successor among nominees to serve out the rest of the term. Boesenecker (pronounced Base-uh-neck-er) is the director for annual giving and stewardship at The Institute for Shipboard Education s Semester at Sea program. He previously led campaigns for Larimer County commissioners Jody Shadduck-McNally and John Kefalas.

What can Fort Collins expect from our new mayor and council members?

This is reporter Jacy Marmaduke. Fort Collins’ municipal election season is over, and now comes the (other) fun part: a new City Council. Elections bring new faces to council pretty much every two years, but this one was especially important because several council members were term-limited or decided not to run again. As a result, we’re getting four new faces on a seven-member council on Tuesday. Mayor-elect Jeni Arndt is our first new mayor in six years; District 3-elect Tricia Canonico is taking Ken Summers’ old seat, District 4-elect Shirley Peel will take the seat currently held by interim appointee Melanie Potyondy and District 5-elect (and former council member) Kelly Ohlson will take Mayor pro-tem Ross Cunniff’s seat.

Legislature advances animal, agriculture bills

Animal acts and drought mitigation are only some of the ideas that saw some advancement in the Colorado Legislature on Wednesday. One of those measures, House Bill 1242, would create a new Office of Agricultural Drought and Climate Resilience within the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Without adding to that department s budget, the new office would provide technical assistance, non-regulated programs and incentives to farmers and ranchers to help them respond to threats related to droughts or climate change, such as wildfires and floods. The bill passed the Colorado House on a party-line 40-23, with only Republicans voting against it, including Reps. Marc Catlin of Montrose, Perry Will of New Castle, Janice Rich of Grand Junction and Matt Soper of Delta.

Montrose Republican gets unprecedented appointment

In what could be a first in the history of the Colorado Legislature, a member of the minority party was chosen vice chairman of a standing committee on Wednesday. That happened when House Speaker Alec Garnett, a Denver Democrat, named Montrose Republican Rep. Marc Catlin as vice chairman of the House Agriculture, Livestock & Water Committee. Traditionally, the chair and vice chair of most committees in both the Colorado House and Senate go to members of the majority party, in this case the Democrats. House speakers appoint members of their own party to committees, and decide who is chair and vice chair, while minority leaders do the same for their party members.
